Grandma’s Internet Marketing

I was looking to find a job that would be suitable for work at home. Or more accurately a source on income that could be generated from anywhere I happened to be. It occurred to me that many people were making comfortable incomes using their computers. That meant as long as I had a computer and could get online I could work. I must say as I started this search my knowledge of a computer was very rudimentary. I could word process, I could email – even send attachments and I could search on Google. I had a very sketchy understanding of a few other programs. However always the one to never say die. If someone else can do this I was sure I could learn.

This blog is a journal of me jumping into the process of learning Internet marketing. The questions I had to start with were:

Could I do it?

Where could I learn to do it?

How long will it take me to learn this?

How do I start?

Where can I find reliable information?

I am not a techie how can I publish a web page

How do people make money doing this?

What is affiliate marketing?

What will it cost?

Can I make enough money to meet my needs?

Who can I trust?

As I started out in my quest to find out how online business marketing works I was lucky that one of my daughter’s friends was able to point me to people that I could trust. I will talk a bit more about that later. As I have gone along learning this work online home business I have found the two most useful things are – one to focus, it is so easy to get distracted and two to persevere. Internet marketing is not a get rich over night business but one from which you can steadily grow your sources of income. As many have helped me on my journey I am happy to share with you what I have learned. One of the “gurus” stated there is no mystery to online Internet marketing, just things you know and things you don’t know. All you seniors that want to learn to work at home come along with me while we find out all those things we don’t know.

In session 7 of James Martell’s Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012, the topic is Keywords Are the Building Blocks. This is a subject after my own heart. Because there has been a dramatic shift from keyword stuffing to writing in a more natural way, it appears that keywords are often neglected. In this session not only does James give you a full hour tutorial but he also provides two supplementary videos on the subject of researching keywords.

As in all other sessions he starts with a quick review of what has gone before. He then moves into this session of the Affiliate Marketers Super Bootcamp 2012. To understand how keywords are necessary he covers the following:

  • How the Google Search Engine Works
  • Identifying the Pages to Develop Your Website
  • How to Complete Your Keyword Research
  • How to Complete Your Optimization Worksheets

Affiliate Marketers Super Bootcamp 2012
James Martell starts session 7 of the Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 by giving a history of search engines and how they have evolved over time. He then went on to discuss Google’s beginnings and where they are now.

The next part of this week’s course was to identify the pages that are necessary to have a complete website. One of the great tools from this session is the Optimization Worksheets for every page for your site. These worksheets have every thing you need to construct a complete page. Another example of how James Martell goes that extra mile for you.
Keywords Are the Building Blocks
Included in this unit were two extra videos – How to Identify Your Primary Keyword and How to Identify Your Tier 1 Secondary Keywords. In the first video he gave a complete tour of how he uses Google External Keyword Tool. In the second one he expanded on how to take your keyword research to a deeper level. He has a bit of a different take on this than many other online marketers.

James Martell's Affiliate Marketers Bootcamp 2012
For the last several weeks I have been reviewing James Martell’s new course Affiliate Marketers Super Bootcamp 2012 and I will continue to do so. Before I post about the next session of his new course I wanted to take a moment to talk about the support that you can get by being a member of James Martell’s site.

Part of the teaching that James Martell offers is to direct you to methods of getting quality backlinks to your site. He has a course that was initially call PAD. These letters stand for Professional Article Distribution. Now this method is not how to submit articles to every article directory that you can find. Rather the idea with this system is to place articles on other high quality websites with a link back to your website. Over time the exact method of how you should do this has changed and James Martell now teaches a different idea than his initial course. Just like everything else in online marketing this method has evolved.
James Martell and His Support
Since I first took James Martell’s course, I have been a member of his site. I have probably not taken full advantage of it; but there are so many courses available to anyone who is a member it is well worth the monthly cost.

Recently it turned out to be more than worth the cost of monthly membership. I have been working very hard to establish backlinks to my sites. I thought that I was following the plan exactly but I ran into a snag. Although I thought I was on the right track of having a master article written then having it rewritten into several original version of the theme. Once I had these articles in hand I then went looking for suitable sites on which to have them published. I have had reasonable success with this method.

However on more than one occasion I ran into rejections because the Webmaster felt they were duplicate articles. Now this embarrassed me greatly and I felt it tarnished my reputation. I posted this problem in the forum on James Martell’s site and was thrilled and somewhat surprised to have two of the moderators offer me help. They both very quickly said send me some copies of your articles and we will evaluate them for you. Their input has been invaluable to me! They also posted their opinion on the site and I think it will help others to learn from my mistakes.

I wanted to share this with the followers of this blog as I have been promoting James Martell’s Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 and I wanted readers to know that you get so much more than just a course from James Martell.

James Martell's Affiliate Marketers Bootcamp 2012

In session 6 Developing Your Website Blueprint Part 2 of 2 of James Martell’s Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012, he continues to guide his students through the beginning steps of getting your website organized. For some people this might seem a bit tedious but if you get this part right, all the rest will fall into place .

In this session he goes over the following:
Developing Your Website Blueprint Part 2 of 2 of James Martell’s Affiliate Marketers Super Bootcamp 2012

  • WordPress.org
  • Grab Site Detail Page
  • Open a Google Document
  • Make a List of Required Plugins
  • Develop Your Own Site Detail Page
  • Go To Bluehost360.com
  • Search, Search, Search, Some More
  • Purchase Your Domain Name
  • Go to StudioPress360.com
  • Purchase Your Domain

As always James spends a little time at the beginning doing a quick review of the previous session Developing Your Website Blueprint Part 1 of 2. He always feels that his students should take small steps to achieve a larger goal. I think also he can gage the effectiveness of the course by finding out where everyone is as they go along.

In session 6 Developing Your Website Blueprint Part 2 of 2 he starts off by explaining the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org and why you should be using WordPress.org to build your site. When I took his Affiliate Marketers Super Bootcamp he was promoting Drupal as the content marketing system. Now Drupal is a wonderful content management system but you have to be quite technically savvy to manage it. I can honestly say I was never able to figure it out. Ultimately with reasonable amounts of pain and frustration I had my site transferred to a WordPress.org system.

From there James reviews the 17 most favorite plugins that they use on their sites. This part is interesting but as he cautions don’t over load your site with too many plugins that you don’t need. I think that once you are up and running you can begin to see which ones that you will need. This goes back to your visitor profile and how you want them to be able to use your site combined with the information that you need to get from site.

James Martell has always been very generous in sharing his materials and in this session he shares his Site Detail Page. This is a wonderful resource for outlining what is on the site and where it is. In this area you can begin to identify your site’s required pages and where they should reside on the site. Using this as a template you can then go on to develop your own Site Detail Page. This is one of the homework steps from this session.

From there he moved to picking a domain name. Again in their practice of sharing Arlene Martell came on and talked about the steps she takes when finding a domain name. She and James outlined 10 ideas on how to find good domain names.

The next step was to go to Bluehost360.com and search for the availability of the names you are considering. James has long been a big supporter of Bluehost for registering and hosting domains. In his first session of this course there is a short video of how to use Bluehost. While at Bluehost take your time to search, search, and search some more.

Bluehost.com Web Hosting $6.95

To wind up this session he introduces the class to the >WordPress themes at StudioPress. They are lovely clean themes with loads of functionality.

From this session there is quite a bit of homework assigned but with the final step of session actually buying the domain, students will feel that they are well on their way to actually seeing a site. In the next session of James Martell’s Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 he will discuss keywords and how to understand them and use them.

James Martell's Affiliate Marketers Bootcamp 2012

Carrying on with Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 , James Martell starts off with a quick review of the two previous sessions – Choosing a Topic and Finding a Niche. He helps define how you can map out what your web site should be about. The great thing about this session as well as the previous ones, you can use this plan for any web site that you have in mind.
Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 Session 5 –Developing Your Blueprint
A great deal of the focus in Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 Session 5 –Developing Your Blueprint is centered on your visitor. James helps you to think not about the information that you are dying to create but about what the visitors to your site might be seeking. He discusses whom these visitors might be, what they might be feeling, why are they landing on your site, what are your goals for them. In total he out lines the 8 big questions that you need to answer to aid you in building a visitor profile.

Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 Session 5 –Developing Your BlueprintJames teaches some interesting avenues that you can use to help answer these 8 questions and to develop whom the visitor to your site might be. After spending some time “digging in” to these resources you will know who your visitor might be and how you should build your web site to appeal to them. James uses Arlene’s process as an example that can be followed carefully for any niche.

For success this is probably the most important step in planning your web site. If the visitor is not able to find a solution to their needs they will immediately leave your site and chances are they will not return. Far too often when a new website is being developed too much emphasis is placed on the graphics and design and not enough on are you solving a problem.

This process will allow you to set goals for both your visitor and for site. In the next session of the Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 James Martell spends time discussing the structuring of the actual pages for the site.

Now that you know how to get organized and have all the tools in place, this week at the Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 Session 2, James Martell was covering how to find the right niche for you. This is a beginning step for starting as an affiliate. Because you plan to be doing this for a long time it is important to pick a niche that works for you.

James started the third session of the Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 talking about how many web sites that you need to have to be successful as an Internet marketer. You will be very surprised to find out what he recommends.

He then spent a long part of the session discussing the ins and outs of the affiliate side of the equation. If you are going to be an affiliate marketer you need to be paid for your efforts. He outlines what exactly this process is, how to evaluate the affiliate programs in your niche, and what you should expect from the merchant. He answered the question – what if the merchant doesn’t have an affiliate program, should I get him to start one? What types of creatives will you need to make your site work with the merchant’s products? How you can judge if the merchant will be supportive of your efforts?

He raps the Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 session 3 up by asking the students to give some serious though to how much they know about the niche that they are about to select. For those of you who follow this journal of a senior learning Internet marketing you will know that I started with James Martell’s Affiliate Marketers Bootcamp 2008.

Knowing absolutely nothing about Internet marketing his was the first course that I took. They give freely and wholly of themselves to help Internet marketers.

The Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp 2012 is just beginning so if you think that it is for you, it is not too late to register. It is being offered at a mere $47.00U.S. per month, making it affordable for everyone. This amount offers so much more and we will discuss what the other benefits are later.

Backlinking Tips

As a senior learning Internet marketing one of the hardest task for me has been the finding of effective ways to build Backlinks. This past week I was once again reminded of the need for this when I was reading Five Backlinking Strategies You Shouldn’t Waste Your Time With In 2012 by Robert Jones (nickname kezanari). I direct your attentin to this post as there are many great ideas in this article and in the comments that have been made.

As followers of this blog you will know that I am an advocate of James Martell of Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp fame. He was recently at Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas and returned with some words of wisdom from Matt Cutts. Matt was quoted as saying things like “I’m not a big fan of article marketing”, “article directories are low-value sites with duplicate, poorly written content that does not add value to the Net”, “I’d lean away from it”. In the above article, kezanari feels that doing mass submission of articles is a pure waste of time. Although there are a number of companies offering services to submit your articles to thousands of sites it appears that this is not the way to go.

The whole idea is to add useful content that visitors will want to read. By adding unique, quality information to the web Google will index your article and the Backlinks in these articles have a better chance of being clicked upon. Plus this will add to the value of your web page that you are hoping to get ranked.

I also took kezanari’s advice and read 18 Link Building Techniques by Ben Jackson on Mitz’s Website. I urge you to read this very insightful article. I for one was surprised to see that ezinearticles.com was still showing a page rank of 6. After the Panda slap I had completely given up on using this site. There are many useful resources in this article. Like others Ben recommends that you pick one method and master it. He also emphasizes the need for quality content. He stresses the need to write for visitors to your article rather than producing articles that are only geared for search engines.

With James, kezanari, and Ben all accentuating the idea of quality, unique content, guest posting is going to be one of the best courses of action. Members of James Martell’s Affiliate Marketers SUPER BootCamp course have access to a course on guest posting.

For me, I have started with this idea of doing guest posts. I have found that I have enjoyed an increase in traffic for those pages to which I have linked back with anchor text. For those of us who are striving to be work at home seniors it is very necessary for us to learn as much as we can about the process of Backlinking.
